Performance & Recovery
TB-500
Also known as: Thymosin beta-4 fragment
A synthetic peptide related to a fragment of thymosin beta-4, a natural protein involved in cell movement and tissue repair, studied mostly in laboratory and animal work.
Overview
TB-500 is the name commonly given to a synthetic peptide derived from thymosin beta-4, a protein the body makes naturally. Thymosin beta-4 helps cells move and organize, which is why it has been studied in tissue repair.
What the research has looked at
Laboratory and animal studies of thymosin beta-4 have examined wound closure, blood vessel growth, inflammation, and recovery after injury in skin, eye and heart tissue. Human clinical trials have mostly tested full-length thymosin beta-4 in forms such as eye drops and topical gels.
What we do not know
- There is little published human data on TB-500 itself, as opposed to full-length thymosin beta-4.
- Products sold under this name vary, and their exact composition is not always clear.
- Long-term safety is unknown.
Regulatory context
TB-500 is not an approved medicine. It is prohibited in sport under World Anti-Doping Agency rules.
