Overview
Sermorelin consists of the first 29 amino acids of growth hormone-releasing hormone, which is the active portion of the natural signal that tells the pituitary gland to release growth hormone.
What the research has looked at
It was approved in the US to help diagnose growth hormone deficiency and to treat growth failure in children. Research in adults has measured growth hormone and IGF-1 responses.
What we do not know
- Evidence for benefits in healthy or aging adults is limited.
- Compounded versions are not the same as the previously approved product, and quality varies.
- Long-term effects of repeated use in adults are not established.
Regulatory context
The branded drug was discontinued in the US in 2008. Sermorelin is not approved for anti-aging, and it is prohibited in sport.
