Semax
Also known as: Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro
A synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide derived from a fragment of the hormone ACTH, developed in Russia and studied for brain protection and cognition.
Overview
Semax is a synthetic peptide based on part of ACTH, a hormone made by the pituitary gland. The ACTH-like portion was kept while the hormonal effects were removed, and a stabilizing tail was added.
What the research has looked at
Animal studies reported protection of brain tissue after reduced blood flow, and changes in the activity of growth-factor genes such as BDNF. In Russia it has been used as a nasal treatment for conditions including stroke recovery.
What we do not know
- There are few large, independently replicated controlled trials.
- Effects on memory or focus in healthy people are not established.
- Long-term safety has not been fully characterized.
